About Our Department

The Internal Medicine department focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the internal organs. This includes kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract, endocrine system (hormones), bone marrow, blood, respiratory system, infectious diseases, and the immune system.

When pets are referred to internal medicine specialists, sometimes the illness is known, but often more information is needed to understand a pet’s condition. Our board-certified internists are skilled diagnosticians and will work with you to explain and explore the full context of diagnostic and treatment options so you can choose what steps are best for you and your pet.

Some conditions are acute and fully treatable, but many require lifelong management. Should your pet need chronic management, our internists will work with you to determine the best path forward, whether it’s with the internist directly, with your primary veterinarian, or a combination of the two.

Internists at Summit perform a variety of diagnostic procedures, including:

  • Endoscopy of gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urinary tracts

  • Endoscopic biopsies and foreign body retrieval

  • Balloon dilation of esophageal and rectal strictures and nasopharyngeal stenosis.

Availability and Referrals

Summit’s Internal Medicine department sees patients 5 days per week (Monday-Friday) and is available for direct referral of sick patients for consultation. Pets experiencing truly emergent symptoms are admitted through our ER with internist support as indicated.
